Sympathetic input into the enteric nervous system.

چکیده
Introduction The basic concepts of the autonomic nervous system of organs and tissues were formulated around the turn of the century and summarised in a classical monograph by Langley (1921). The detailed distribution of the sympathetic nerves was, however, not elucidated until it became possible to stain sympathetic neurones specifically using the FalckHillarp technique. When this technique was applied to the gastrointestinal tract the picture seen was in some respects surprising. At the time it was generally believed that most organs and tissues had a dual innervation (sympathetic and parasympathetic) with opposite eVects on function. It seemed, therefore, puzzling when the Falck-Hillarp technique revealed that innervation of a major part of the gastrointestinal wall, the smooth muscle layers, was very scarce. Instead it was found that most adrenergic fibres make contact with one of the two major plexuses in the alimentary canal. Adrenergic innervation is seen in the mucosa, in particular around the crypt epithelium. The functional consequences of this distribution are discussed below. This brief review of the interplay between the sympathetic and enteric nervous systems will discuss the control of blood vessels, epithelial transport, motility, and endocrine cells (the enterochromaYn cells in particular).

Evaluation of the Neuroendocrine System and the cytokine pattern in warm and cold nature persons.
Introduction: Traditional Iranian medicine (TIM) is accompanied by little side effects in experience. The mechanisms involved in TIM are not much clear. The purpose of this study is assessment of differences of warm and cold nature persons in neuroendocrine system and cytokine pattern (Th1/Th2) of immune responses. Methods: Thirty seven 20 to 40 years old male volunteers were divided into 2 ...
متن کاملEnteric glia are targets of the sympathetic innervation of the myenteric plexus in the guinea pig distal colon.
Astrocytes respond to synaptic activity in the CNS. Astrocytic responses are synapse specific and precisely regulate synaptic activity. Glia in the peripheral nervous system also respond to neuronal activity, but it is unknown whether glial responses are synapse specific. We addressed this issue by examining the activation of enteric glia by distinct neuronal subpopulations in the enteric nervo...
متن کاملDual origin of enteric neurons in vagal Schwann cell precursors and the sympathetic neural crest.
Most of the enteric nervous system derives from the "vagal" neural crest, lying at the level of somites 1-7, which invades the digestive tract rostro-caudally from the foregut to the hindgut. Little is known about the initial phase of this colonization, which brings enteric precursors into the foregut. Here we show that the "vagal crest" subsumes two populations of enteric precursors with contr...
متن کاملAutonomic and Enteric Nervous System Dysfunction May Play a Role in Hyperemesis Gravidarum
BACKGROUND Nausea and vomiting, seen in 70-85% of all pregnancies, becomes intractable in hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). We aimed to investigate the relationship between HG and autonomic nervous system functioning and gastric electrical activity. METHODS Twenty-seven pregnant patients, 21 with HG and six normal, were studied with sympathetic adrenergic; percent vasoconstriction (%VC) and postur...
متن کاملInvestigation of sympathetic mechanism of inverse relationship between scalp and leg blood flow with increasing intracranial pressure in the rabbit
Intracranial pressure (ICP) is one of most important factors in determining health and function of cerebroscular system. However the methods of measuring ICP are usually invasive . In an attempt to find a noninvasive method to assess ICP, in previous study web found a reverse relationships between changes in ICP and blood flow in scalp (SBF) and leg skin (LSBF) . In this study the role of sympa...
